Pep Guardiola believes Saturday's 2-0 friendly win over Girona will stand his players in good stead ahead of the second half of the season.

Goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland sealed the victory in our first match since 12 November, with the Blues set to return to competitive action against Liverpool next Thursday.

While 16 of the squad went to the World Cup, several players have not had match action in 35 days.

Ahead of an important period across all competitions and with many senior men still away, Guardiola selected a mix of youth and experience.

As well as Haaland and De Bruyne, first teamers Stefan Ortega Moreno, Rico Lewis, Sergio Gomez, Ilkay Gundogan, Cole Palmer and Riyad Mahrez also featured.

They were joined in the starting XI by EDS players Jadel Katongo, Shea Charles and Morgan Rogers and Guardiola was happy with what he saw.

“It was really good,” he said.

“It was the first game after a really long time and it was good for players who haven’t played much and for players like Erling, Riyad and Sergio who haven’t played at all.

“They were good minutes for them and for us all and we played against our friends from Girona, so it was good.”
