Pep Guardiola says the quality and mentality of the ‘exceptional’ Riyad Mahrez remain key components for City as we prepare for Sunday’s Etihad encounter against the Algerian’s former club Leicester City.

A Premier League title winner with the Foxes in 2016, Mahrez has gone on to enjoy even more success since moving to City two years ago, winning another title, the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups in his time with us so far.

The attacking winger made his first appearance of the season in last Thursday’s 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Bournemouth after having his pre-season preparations afflicted by a positive COVID-19 test.

And ahead of a possible reunion against his former side, the City manager was effusive about Mahrez’s importance to the squad.

“Riyad is an exceptional player. He arrived late after the positive COVID-19 test only training for a few days before Wolves but I know how important he is for us,” the manager asserted.

“For the quality, the passes and especially his mentality and he is aggressive to score goals.

“We will train the guys who didn’t play (against Bournemouth) and we will see the way we are going to play and then which players will play.”
