Pep Guardiola praised Bernardo Silva and Manuel Akanji for their work rate in Sunday’s Premier League defeat at Liverpool.

Bernardo played at the base of midfield while defender Akanji continuously stepped forward out of defence as City fought against the league leaders at Anfield.

Cody Gakpo opened the scoring for our hosts just 12 minutes in before Guardiola’s team gained a footing in the game.

However, a second-half Mo Salah penalty put the game beyond us to make it four league defeats in a row.

With Rodri unavailable for the remainder of this season, the boss is seeking an alternative in the holding midfield area.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Guardiola made it clear that he is pleased with his squad’s professionalism in difficult circumstances.

“I can only say to Bernardo and Manu in a position they are not used to – all the players - they made an incredible effort,” he said.

“Manu with Rodri is a different player. Bernardo is different. They made an incredible effort.

“Jack in the middle can help us to have that control and the vision in the final third. As much as we can win games, we will be a better team.”
