Pep Guardiola says Ruben Dias has been key to Manchester City’s fine form this season as he again praised the defender’s leadership qualities.

Dias quickly established himself as an important figure in the City side following his summer arrival from Benfica, producing consistently authoritative displays as part of the meanest defence in the Premier League.

Guardiola has hailed the Portugal international’s impact on several occasions and ahead of Saturday’s game against Leeds United – against whom he made his debut in October – the manager reiterated how valuable the 23-year-old has been as City continue to fight for success on four fronts.

“He has been so important so far,” said Guardiola at his pre-match press conference.

“Still you have two months before the end of the season, but he has been so important for the continuity and leadership and for the quality when he has played.”

The City boss also spoke for the first time about Kevin De Bruyne’s contract extension and the threat posed by Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
