Pep Guardiola says the impressive manner of City’s 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final win at Newcastle should serve as his squad’s performance template for the rest of the season.

Guardiola’s side were at their mesmeric best at St James’ Park – especially in a dominant opening 45 minutes.

But as he looked ahead to the visit of Jurgen Klopp’s side – as well as looming key FA Cup and Champions League matches against Arsenal and Real Madrid - Guardiola said the Newcastle performance was the standard he wanted to see his players maintain.

“I like the way we played at Newcastle,” declared the City manager.

“We suffered a lot there in the last few years. We dropped points there losing to a late goal last year and then conceding a late equaliser earlier this season.

“The way we played there is what we have to do.

“The Premier League is important, we play every game first to qualify for the Champions League as still we are not there. It’s tough if you don’t play how you are.
