Pep Guardiols feels Manchester City are edging closer to reaching the latter stages of the Champions League.

This is the Club’s tenth successive season in the competition, but only once have we been beyond the quarter-finals.

Guardiola says he does not feel City have been too far away from doing so in previous years, but admits that we need to eliminate the mistakes of the past if we’re to make the next step and achieve success in Europe.

“I have the feeling we are close,” he said ahead of our group stage opener against Porto.

“Every season when I analyse the way we went out, I have the feeling we are close. At the same time, we make mistakes that make you feel we don’t deserve to go through.

“Being in the quarter finals a lot of times and [in the competition] 10 times in a row is good for us, but I know the reality of this club.

“The next step is making a step forward in the Champions League. The things we have done are the past and now it is a new opportunity.

“In this competition you have to do things differently to what we have done.

“When you review the games, even when we lost 3-0 to Liverpool, or the game against Tottenham or Lyon, I always feel we are not far away.

“There are little gaps and we have to solve it. When you don’t solve it, it is because you don’t deserve it.”
