Pep Guardiola has praised the pilot responsible for Manchester City’s flight home from Portugal after our midweek Champions League win over Sporting Lisbon.

City’s plane was diverted to Liverpool after high winds brought about as a result of Storm Dudley prevented it from landing as planned in Manchester.

Guardiola admitted turbulence caused some anxious moments during the final stage of the journey, but said the pilot handled the situation incredibly well to ease everyone’s concerns.

“To be honest when I saw after the video, it felt more scary than it was,” he explained at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s game against Tottenham Hotspur.

“It was bumping a lot. We were going down [to land] and the engines rolled on and we went up. I knew then something [had] happened.

“We had a pilot who did incredibly well. He spoke to us, was so calm, told us the wind was bad and we were landing in Liverpool. The pilot was magnificent.

“We felt anxious but because of the way he talked to us, everyone was calm.”

The manager also discussed the latest injury news, his thoughts on Tottenham and his admiration for Antonio Conte at his pre-match media briefing.
