Pep Guardiola paid tribute to the ‘special qualities' of Phil Foden after his introduction from the bench helped inspire City to a deserved 1-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg win over Atletico Madrid.

With the game goalless after a hard-fought first hour, the England international was summoned from the bench along with Jack Grealish and Gabriel Jesus.

And within four minutes, Foden’s vision helped create the all-important breakthrough as his deft pass created the space and opportunity for Kevin De Bruyne to fire home a crucial matchwinner.

“Phil has special qualities - his space in his first steps are massive and he had the composure to make an incredible assist for Kevin,” Guardiola reflected.

“With Gabriel and Phil they could change the game when it was flat when they were a little bit more tired - Jack too with his quality.

“They did it and they were good.”
