Pep Guardiola says the prize of reaching the Carabao Cup semi-finals is all the incentive City need ahead of Wednesday’s quarter-final at home to Brentford (19.30 UK).

Under Guardiola’s inspired stewardship, City have accrued a hugely impressive record in the League Cup, lifting the famous trophy across four consecutive years between 2018 and 2021.

This term, after recording fine victories away to Huddersfield and Swansea in rounds three and four, City now have the incentive of marching a step closer to Wembley if we can overcome the challenge of Keith Andrews’ formidable side.

And although there are issues with injuries and international call-ups with the boss also mindful of carefully managing his squad, Guardiola said the spur for City was plain to see.

“Of course we want a step to get to the semi-finals,” the City boss declared.

“At home to Brentford we know how difficult they are – we have seen it this season – but we are going to play to try to do it.

“The previous seasons at the beginning [of the Carabao Cup] sometimes we faced tough teams, Newcastle and Tottenham away, but we performed really well.

“Other times we’ve had a lot of injuries. And when you have injuries, [you need to] be fit for the Premier League or other competitions that are more important.

“But we are going to try.”
