Pep Guardiola says it is important his Manchester City side focuses on its own game rather than being too preoccupied with Manchester United’s approach in this weekend’s derby.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been employing a four-man defence until the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool, after which he switched to five at the back and, with injury ruling Raphael Varane out Saturday’s game, there is the potential for the Norwegian to alter his system again.

Guardiola is confident City can adjust to whatever we come up against, but wants his team to play with courage in attack against what could be a heavily guarded United defence.

“I am pretty sure if they have a central defender they are going to play with five,” he explained at his pre-match press conference.

“But if they don’t have them they will play with four, or maybe the start with four and after they have five.

“I am not in touch with the manager so I don’t know what they are going to do. I have to try to think of different options and after that do our game.

“We have played against five at the back many times. We’ve broken it. Sometimes we don’t. Nothing changes.

“It is about what we do with the ball and without the ball and having the courage to play.”
