Pep Guardiola has paid tribute to the tactical versatility of Phil Foden, describing the England international as 'fundamental' to the City squad.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has shone in a variety of positions for City this season. At different times Foden has been deployed out wide on either wing, behind the striker or further upfront.

And speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League Group C fixture against Marseille, the City manager said Foden’s adaptability was a huge bonus for him.

“Yeah, it’s so good. Now in this moment I see him playing upfront because of his dynamic sense of goal and he helps us with first pressure,” Guardiola declared.

“When he is 24, 25 I think he will be able to play more defensive positions.

“Now he can play both wingers, behind strikers and as a striker.

“As a manager, having a player like this who can play several positions is fundamental.”
