Pep Guardiola has praised Newcastle United’s “exceptional recruitment” for their impressive season, not least in choosing Eddie Howe as their coach.

The Magpies come to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday for the 12.30 (UK) kick-off, just four points off the top-four, with two games in the hand.

After a thrilling 3-3 draw at St James’ Park back in August, our boss is expecting a tough clash against a side that have been beaten just twice in the Premier League this season.

Howe took over at Newcastle in November 2021 with the Club 19th in the Premier League and has quickly turned them into challengers at the other end of the table.

“They have not been here for a long time so you always think they need time but they made exceptional recruitment; exactly what they need,” Guardiola said.

“[They have] a manager with huge quality in many, many things. Maybe they will stay there.”
