Pep Guardiola is looking to improve his FA Cup semi-final record after we made it through to the last four in 2022/23.

City are set to face Sheffield United after seeing off fellow Championship side Burnley 6-0 in the quarter-finals this weekend.

However, Guardiola has seen the sky blues lose our last three semi-finals in the competition – 3-2 to Liverpool in 2021/22, 1-0 to Chelsea in 2020/21 and 2-0 to Arsenal in 2019/20.

We defeated Brighton 1-0 to reach the final in 2018/19 as we went on to lift the famous old trophy with a 6-0 victory over Watford.

Before that, we lost to Arsenal 2-1 in the semi-final of 2016/17.

Guardiola, who is a prolific winner having lifted four Premier Leagues and four League Cups for City, is well aware of what has happened at the competition’s last four stage previously and wants to produce a positive result this time around.

On the FA Cup, he said: “We love it and the worst games we play in the FA Cup is always the semi-final at Wembley. Never we were there.

“Our performance was really, really poor all the time we were there.

“Even the year we won the FA Cup in 2019, in the semi-final against Brighton it was not really good.

“I don’t know why but we struggle. Hopefully one day we can play the semi-finals in Manchester and not go to Wembley and Wembley people come here to change the dynamic.

“But the last years always happen before and after the Champions League quarter-finals and two or three days of travel.

“Hopefully this season we can prepare a bit better and have a chance to play the final. It’s a dream to play there.

“But again we have been there four or five times in semi-finals and this season we are going to try.”

But how do we up our game in this latest semi-final against the Blades?

Guardiola insists the key is to ‘behave who we are’.

He added: “We just have to be prepared better here [in the head] to play semi-finals of the FA Cup. You have to be ready. It’s so important.

“We play naive, we play no good. 3-0 against Liverpool at half-time. Against Arsenal when we lost it was really bad and never we were good.

“Hopefully this time we can behave who we are, that’s all.

“It’s not about reach the final. It’s just always I had the feeling we didn’t compete, we didn’t play good, we were not there, we were not hungry enough to play the final.

“To play the FA Cup final, it’s so nice, we played it once against Watford, it was really, really nice. FA Cup in this country is so nice.

“Once we are there we have to try to do my best and hopefully we can do it.”
