Pep Guardiola hailed the impact and personality of Julian Alvarez in the wake of City’s superb 4-0 FA Cup third round win over Chelsea at the Etihad.

Fresh from helping Argentina win the World Cup, Alvarez was afforded his first start since the Qatar showpiece and led the City line with distinction, scoring a first half penalty and proving a constant thorn in Chelsea’s side.

Reflecting on both the win and Alvarez’s impact, Guardiola hailed his spirit and talent – and said he would prove a vital figure looking ahead to the rest of the season with City competing on four fronts.

“I missed his happiness. He helped us a lot, with the World Cup. Today Julian feels and Riyad as well that the way we went there, how aggressive we were,” Guardiola declared.

“He played really, really well. I said many times, we are now still in four competitions, so we need all the squad.

“Everyone is humble to accept the minutes for the team, they will be welcome to be part of this team.”
