Pep Guardiola says he was delighted by the performances of Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne against Wycombe Wanderers, as they continue to work their way back to full fitness.

The midfield duo, who were both ruled out of the early stages of the season due to injury, each opened their accounts for the season as City began our defence of the Carabao Cup with an impressive 6-1 victory over the Chairboys.

De Bruyne captained the side on the night and hauled us level just after the 20-minute mark with an incisive finish after being threaded through by Foden.

And our number 47 turned from provider to scorer on the stroke of half-time, lashing a vicious long-range drive past David Stockdale’s despairing dive to add our third on the night.

While Guardiola admitted that the midfield duo were both at different stages of match sharpness, he was pleased by the progress they made under the Etihad lights.

“Of course, definitely (impressed),” the City boss reflected.

“Phil was injured for two months after the national team. Phil doesn’t need many games to get his rhythm because he lives for football 24 hours a day. He is sharp.

“Kevin needs time for a proper pre-season. He was injured in the Champions League final and for the national team.

“He needs his rhythm to be fit. That’s why it was so good for him to play 90 minutes today.

“Knowing he is not in the right condition. Now is the moment for Kevin to start to be ready.

“He has not been running back like he runs forward. Today he did it for the first time. He will be back because he is an incredible player.”
