Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Max Alleyne again following a string of positive performances, with his latest helping City shut out Newcastle.

It made Pep Guardiola’s side the first team to deny Eddie Howe’s side from finding the back of the net on home soil in 2025/26.

And that could prove key as City head into the second leg of our Carabao Cup semi-final clashes with Newcastle with a two-goal advantage.

At the heart of City’s defence, Alleyne has been paired with Abdukodir Khusanov. And since Alleyne’s return from his loan at Championship outfit Watford, the 20-year-old Academy graduate has looked right at home.

He’s helped our boys in blue maintain our unbeaten run, beginning his senior City career with a 1-1 draw against Brighton two days after his homecoming. He then scored on his second successive start, kicking things off in our 10-1 triumph over Exeter in the FA Cup.

And Tuesday evening saw him help City earn a vital clean sheet in what was a good test for the versatile defender.

“A good test,” said Guardiola when asked for his thoughts on Alleyne in his post-match press conference.

“With Wissa [Newcastle are] a transitions team and after with Nick Woltemade. With the ball he is extraordinary. Defensively I cannot be more grateful for Javi Garcia and Watford.

“The fact that he took those minutes. Yesterday, I said in the press conference, he was playing in the second team with the Academy with 10 people, going to Watford in the Championship with strikers with long balls.

“They [helped him] make a step up as a football player.  Today was an incredibly good test.

“He has [Abdukodir] Khusanov and Nathan [Ake] alongside who are proper defenders and they help him a lot.

“With the ball and with Nico O’Reilly playing that position for the first time in two years. They played really good. First half people up front [did] not connect. Second half Erling and especially Antoine are much better.”
