Pep Guardiola says the demands of the congested fixture schedule mean City can’t afford to look too far ahead – or worry about trying to reduce the eight-point gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool.

City got back to winning ways with a crucial 1-0 triumph at Southampton on Saturday – and if we win our game in hand, we will reduce the gap at the top to just five points.

However, with games continuing to come thick and fast, Guardiola says his only focus is on the here and now – starting with Tuesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final away at Arsenal.

“I don’t know how our season will go - we go game by game. It’s the only thing we can do,” said the City manager.

“Now we go to London to play Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, then we play Newcastle, Everton and Chelsea at Christmas.

“We can’t think too much (ahead).”
