Pep Guardiola believes the October international break has helped in ensuring Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo got valuable game time under their belts.

Bernardo has made two appearances from the bench for City this term, while Cancelo has yet to figure with the pair both picking up injuries in September, ironically while away on international duty.

However the duo both figured for their country in their latest Nations League matches played over the past 10 days – and the City boss says that competitive action is just what they needed ahead of a key period of domestic games starting with tomorrow’s return to Premier League action at home to Arsenal.

“For Bernardo and Joao who did not have a normal pre-season, they got games and it was good,” the City manager declared.

“I never complain about the international break. I know how important it is for players. It is an honour and a privilege.

“Always we want the players to come back fit, with no injuries. Sometimes you can’t control it.

“I am more than convinced that players get injured because we demand them to refresh the bodies after a demanding season and the body says no.”
