Pep Guardiola says Kevin De Bruyne’s midfield role at Manchester City won’t change under his stewardship.

Since the Catalan’s arrival at the Club in the summer of 2016, the Belgian maestro has played 276 times, scored 75 goals and registered 127 assists in all competitions from an advanced engine room position.

During that time, the 2020 and 2021 PFA Players’ Player of the Year has helped us to five Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, four League Cups and a Champions League.

And with De Bruyne back to full fitness approaching the business end of the term, Guardiola explained how the 32-year-old’s midfield responsibility will remain the same as we relentlessly pursue more honours.

“With Kevin in eight years he’s never played as a holding midfielder defending deep,” the boss declared.

“Kevin has to play in the position he played during the eight years we have been together. Nothing changes. Absolutely nothing.

“Of course he can help us and when he runs deep he helps us a lot but I prefer he does high pressing close to the box. Nothing different to all the period [he’s been with me].”
