Pep Guardiola is hoping that the introduction of semi-automated offsides will help speed up the game.

The system has been used in the Champions League since the 2022/23 season group stage, quickly followed by the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

It made its debut in English football for the fifth round of the FA Cup in February and will this weekend be used for the first time in the Premier League for all matches.

MATCH PREVIEW | CITY V CRYSTAL PALACE

Our match against Crystal Palace on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium kicks off at 12:30 (UK) and as the first game of the weekend, it means we will be making a little bit of history.

While controversies surrounding VAR and the length of time used to make decisions, semi-automated offsides should help speed up that area of decision making.

And Pep welcomes anything that helps make it faster.

“I think the reason why [it is being introduced] is to make it quicker right?” he said.

“Offside is offside, not offside if not offside – well done, [I] welcome it, it will be better.”
