Pep Guardiola says the welfare of the players should come first in any discussions between managers and the Premier League around the Covid-19 pandemic.

Managers are due to meet with the Premier League and broadcasters on Thursday afternoon.

Premier League clubs opted on Monday to not alter the festive schedule and the City boss insisted he had no complaints about the decision in his pre-match press conference.

However, he stressed that whatever verdict is reached in this afternoon’s meeting should have the players’ welfare at its centre.

“The tradition from Boxing Day is massively important. It’s one of the characteristics of this league and why it is special in this period. It won’t change because it’s tradition,” Guardiola said.

“The problem is the fixture calendar, 365 days a year with the international duties and huge competitions with a lot of games - this is the problem that must be solved.

“The players get three weeks holidays in the summer, that’s all and then it’s the season again.

“This is too much, now of course the situation we know exactly for five or six games postponed and many cases in many teams that happened. It’s the reality.

“You have to adapt to the situation of what will happen in the next few weeks but this afternoon managers will talk with the Premier League and broadcasters and decide what is best for everyone.

“Of course, the welfare of the players and people should be most important. But this is the only country who don’t accept five substitutions, just three. Why?

“It’s much better for everyone, for these amount of games year by year in the competitions, but the Premier League or the clubs decide no.

“So that’s why what they decide for Manchester City, for myself, it will be okay. No discussions anymore.”
