Pep Guardiola says Raheem Sterling has the desire to be the best as he declared the winger has always performed well for Manchester City.

Sterling was in and out of the starting XI towards the end of last season, but went on to be England’s star man as he scored three times at EURO 2020.

Guardiola was delighted to see the 26-year-old shine on the international stage, but does not feel City’s No.7 is in a position where he needs to translate that form into club football.

The Catalan has always been satisfied with Sterling’s performances and says he only saw his minutes reduced last season due to the exceptional form of two of his team-mates.

“He has always had a good season,” said the boss ahead of City’s game against Tottenham Hotspur.

“When he played, he made his standard. I know his desire to be the best, to create these moments.

“At the beginning of the season everyone wants the best and we want the best for everyone.

“I am more than delighted for the Euros he did, being the hero in decisive moments.

“I think all the players - some individually - were in a good level. We’re very pleased and hopefully they could rest well and start again.

“Last part of the season he didn’t play as much as the past but the reason why [was] Riyad was in incredible top form and Phil was unstoppable. This is the only reason.”
