Watch as Pep Guardiola speaks to assembled media following Wednesday's 3-0 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

Madrid captain Federico Valverde scored a first-half hat-trick to give the Spanish side a healthy advantage going into next week’s return leg at the Etihad Stadium.

City were on top early on until a long pass from Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois sent Valverde in behind for his first of the evening in the 20th minute.

He made it two before the half hour mark with a left-footed drive angled across Gianluigi Donnarumma.

And the scoring was complete before the break, when he collected a Brahim Diaz chip and slotted home.

It could have been worse midway through the second period when the hosts were awarded a penalty but Donnarumma stopped Vinicius Junior’s effort.

We pushed hard for a goal in the time that remained but a compact Real Madrid held firm.

Guardiola faced questions from journalists in English and Spanish shortly after the final whistle.
