Pep Guardiola is delighted by the manner in which Sam Edozie and his fellow youngsters have stepped up to the demands of senior football during pre-season.

The 18-year-old was a key part of our Elite Development Squad’s inaugural 2020-21 Premier League 2 triumph, and found the net in each of our three friendly matches leading up to the new campaign.

After making an impact from the bench in our opening victory over Preston, Edozie was handed a starting berth against both Barnsley and Blackpool, linking up with Benjamin Mendy down our left flank.

And while the boss has called for people not to get too carried away by his impact, he also heaped praise on the youngster after another standout performance against the Seasiders, in which he opened the scoring after less than three minutes.

“As a young talent, having a special quality, a guy who gets to the box with intention to score a goal - it’s so important for wingers,” he pointed out.

“He’s an incredible young player with good pace.

“But we have to be patient with him. He had minutes and played good and this is important.”
