Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Kyle Walker will be City captain for the 2024/25 campaign with five others in the leadership team.

The defender described it as a “privilege and honour” to wear the armband last season when he was chosen for the role by his team-mates.

His four vice-captains – Kevin De Bruyne, Ruben Dias, Rodri and Bernardo Silva – will continue in their roles too with the addition of a fifth player.

Ilkay Gundogan, who was the captain that preceded Walker and lifted three trophies in our historic Treble season, has also been nominated after returning to the Etihad Stadium in the summer.

Guardiola is not involved in the squad vote and is happy to let the players decide.

“Kyle is the captain,” he said in his prematch news conference ahead of Saturday’s game away to Newcastle United at 12:30 (UK). “The vice-captains are Kevin, Ruben, Rodri, Bernardo and Gundo.

“It was too tight [to have just five players]. For me, it doesn’t matter. As long as we have less problems, it doesn’t matter.”
