Ahead of their meeting on Saturday, Pep Guardiola has thanked Vincent Kompany for his help in his early days at Manchester City.

Kompany, manager of Championship leaders Burnley, makes his first return to the Etihad Stadium for this weekend’s FA Cup quarter-final.

The Belgian won four Premier League titles as Club captain before leaving in 2019, with the second two triumphs coming under the guidance of Guardiola.

City v Burnley | Match preview

The former defender is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the Club’s history and our boss has particularly fond memories of working with him.

“Everybody knows he is an important, incredible figure here,” he said.

“He is one of the biggest legends I have had. Personally it was a pity he was a lot of time injured when we were together.

“The important thing was how he helped me from day one in another country in the locker room. In the bad moments he made a step forward to help the team.

“He said to me the things he believe was best for the club. He was an exceptional captain and a top human being.”
