Pep Guardiola says Rico Lewis’s England recall for next month's Nations League fixtures is a ‘deserved’ recognition for the City youngster’s superb start to the new season.

Lewis was one of four City players selected by Three Lions interim boss Lee Carsley for England’s Nations League fixtures against Finland and the Republic of Ireland in early September along with John Stones, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden.

Kyle Walker, who has yet to figure for City this season after his exertions with England at this summer’s EURO 2024 finals, was not named in the squad – but Guardiola also said he had no doubt once Walker resumes action his qualities will see the defender back in contention.

“Absolutely he deserves it [Rico]. I am happy for him, really happy,” Guardiola said when asked about the England squad announcement.

“Rico is playing good and had a pre-season so his rhythm is better and that is why he is in the position..

“No [I have not spoken to Kyle]. But when he is back it will be soon, and he is an incredible weapon for the national team because he has special qualities.

“But it was late, he arrived back with a few niggles and some problems.

“There are many games for the national team as well and with his physicality he has chance to come back, play well here and the option to play for national team remains open.”
