Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Fernandinho will succeed David Silva as Manchester City captain.

As was the case when Silva replaced Vincent Kompany, Guardiola was happy to let his players decide who took over the armband, with the Brazilian midfielder receiving the most votes from the squad and backroom staff.

Now in his eighth season at the Club, Fernandinho is a player the City boss believes is a natural leader and he is pleased with the team’s choice.

“Players and staff voted for the captain,” Guardiola confirmed ahead of the new season.

“[Fernandinho] will be good as he always has done since I met him. It doesn’t matter whether he is the first captain or not. Always, he is a guy leading.

“The players and staff decide, and I am more than delighted.”
