Pep Guardiola insisted that his side have to earn the right to become champions as City gear up for the start of a defining final three months of the season.

We play host to Wolves on Tuesday in the wake of a record-breaking run of 20 consecutive wins that has seen us open up a 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

City are also through to the Carabao Cup final, into the quarter-final of the FA Cup and in a strong position in our Champions League last 16 tie with Borussia Monchengladbach.

But, speaking at his pre-match press conference, the boss warned there was still much work to be done before any silverware was decided.

“We are delighted with what we have done so far but at the end what counts is the trophies,” Guardiola declared.

“The crown, if you want to take it, you have to win. In March nobody is a champion.

“(There are) 36 points to play for. A lot of points. Just in England, every team can lose in one week and everything will be the same.

“Right now, the champions are Liverpool and in Europe it is Bayern Munich. If you want the honour, you have to win it with these 36 points.”
