City face Europa League champions Sevilla on Wednesday 16 August at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraes, home to Greek side Olympiacos F.C, looking to bring home our first UEFA Super Cup title.
We qualified for the fixture by virtue of being crowned Champions of Europe for the first time in our history following a 1-0 victory over Inter in June 2023.
Our Spanish opponents have been a formidable force in the Europa League, with seven titles in total, including five out of the last ten seasons.
Sevilla have also won the Super Cup before, beating a star-studded Barcelona 3-0 back in 2006, but have had to settle for second in their last five appearances.
It was only last season when we faced José Luis Mendilibar’s side, winning 4-0 in Andalusia before a 3-1 triumph at the Etihad Stadium.
However, as Pep Guardiola points out, Sevilla won’t be there to simply make up the numbers, and the boss expressed his admiration for the Spanish side’s consistency in winning back-to-back titles.
But having had the experience of coming through a tough fight to win the Champions League in Istanbul, it puts us in good stead as we look to add another European title to the trophy cabinet.
In the above video, Pep, Rodrigo and Ruben all reflect on that historic triumph against Inter, before assessing our opponents in Athens this Wednesday.
