Pep Guardiola says City’s rollercoaster history in the Champions League is a key part of defining his time so far at the Etihad Stadium.

The Catalan led us to our maiden success in the competition in 2023, having previously reached the final in 2021.

In total, we’ve featured in the last eight in all but two of Guardiola’s nine complete seasons at City, with dramatic exits either side of that historic night in Istanbul two years ago.

Tuesday’s clash with Bayer Leverkusen will mark the boss’ 100th outing as City manager in the Champions League proper (excluding qualifiers).

He’s won 62 of the first 99 games, drawing 19 times and losing just 18.

Having recently overseen his 1000th game in management, the boss reflected on this latest landmark in Monday’s press conference.

“I’m getting old. Every week is another milestone,” he said.

“It means that every season we have been there. It’s a huge competition, players and managers love it. To challenge yourself with the best teams in Europe, we love it.

“[We’ve had] more disappointment than good moments, there have been good moments especially in the group stage.

“Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, little margins in the last minute and for decisions we cannot control we are out.

“Those moments define the club and staff. Not everything is flowers. It’s part of who we are. We live it and that’s what we needed.”
