Pep Guardiola says Erling Haaland is getting back to his very best after missing two months of the season through injury.

The City striker has eight goals in his last five appearances ahead of the top-of-the-table clash with Liverpool on Sunday at 15:45 (UK).

Haaland suffered a foot injury in December and returned to the starting line-up against Brentford on February 5 but still leads the Premier League goalscoring charts with 18 so far this season.

Guardiola says it can be tougher for the 23-year-old to return from setbacks than other players but stressed that he will play a key part in the final months of the season.

“He is improving, he will have setbacks, he will improve again, have a setback and improve again,” the City boss said.

“Football and life is like that, you have problems and it’s how you solve it. The numbers of Erling, his contribution is massive.

“Step by step, yeah [he is getting better]. The last game he was a little tired.

“Two months is a long time for a guy who is so tall but step-by-step and I’m pretty sure that at the end of the season he will help us a lot.”
