The Champions League has pitted us against the 15-time European champions in each of the previous three campaigns, with the victor going on to lift the trophy each time.
Filled with drama and passion, the repetition of this fixture has created an enthralling tale of Europe’s two leading sides over recent seasons.
City v Real Madrid | Match preview
City looked nailed on to progress through the semi-final encounter in 2021/22 but two very, very late Real Madrid strikes took it to extra time, where Carlo Ancelotti’s men prevailed.
2022/23 saw us out for revenge and after a tight affair at the Bernabeu, we tore Real apart in the second leg with a 4-0 victory that many consider one of the best City performances of all-time. That success, of course, came as part of our run to an historic Treble.
Last year, the teams met at the quarter-final stage and although we felt we created enough chances to win the tie in 180 minutes, it eventually went to penalties. Real succeeded and so went on to reclaim the trophy they’ve won more than twice as many times as anyone else.
After struggles in the league phase for both teams, we now welcome the Spanish giants back to the Etihad for a knockout round play-off tie, with kick-off set for 20:00 (UK) on Tuesday evening.
