Originally created in 2022 to commemorate 30 years of the Premier League, the above video reflects on the opening day of the 2016/17 campaign, as City welcomed Sunderland to the Etihad Stadium.
We edged out the Black Cats 2-1, in what was also the managerial debut of David Moyes for our opponents.
Before the game, Pep said he was looking forward to “seeing how the Premier League is in life, not just on television”.
After it, he admitted it was a delight “to live the experience for the first time at the Etihad with our people”.
The game itself included the debut of new signings John Stones and Nolito as well as Willy Caballero between the sticks in place of Joe Hart.
Sergio Aguero’s penalty, after Raheem Sterling was fouled by Patrick van Aanholt, gave City an early lead. But Pep saw his new side pegged back by Jermain Defoe.
However, it was a fitting finale as City picked up three points with an 87th-minute winner when Paddy McNair headed into his own net, under pressure from Kelechi Iheanacho and Fabian Delph.
