Rodrigo wants his City team-mates to focus on being as good as we can be as we head into an exciting second half of the Premier League season.

We’re aiming for a record breaking fourth successive title after coming out on top in each of the last three campaigns.

Ahead of this weekend’s trip to Newcastle, City sit in third with 40 points from 19 matches.

That leaves us five behind leaders Liverpool, who have played a game more than us.

Newcastle v City | Match preview

With the tension set to rise in the coming months as we edge closer to the finish line, Rodrigo says City’s previous exposure to these situations tells us to pay attention to our own game rather than what our challengers are doing.

“We have the experience of knowing what happens,” he said.

“We’ve been in front, we’ve been behind. We know both situations. The most important thing is to keep going ourselves.

“Don’t think too much about who is with us fighting. This league is not going to be one or two contenders, every game is a final and a battle. Everyone can be here because the level is so, so high in every game.

“If you ask me the real contender is Liverpool because they have the experience of winning in recent years.

“Arsenal have showed they can do it and for sure they have experience they didn’t have last year. Villa, you can see how big they are coming and they are playing with personality and ambition.

“It’s not easy if you are there for the first time to sustain this but you never know. I can tell you good things about many teams but I would choose to be City.

“Since I came here you have the feeling every year that’s it not enough. Because you were champions in the past does not mean you are going to achieve it again.

“You have to increase and upgrade and the players coming in have to be even better. We all have to be fit if we want to achieve. In this moment all the players are coming back and we’ve had time playing together, which is important.”
