Raheem Sterling has hailed Manchester City's fighting spirit after battling to a 1-0 victory against Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.

The Englishman netted the only goal of the game in the 16th minute, calmly slotting beyond Alex McCarthy after an accurate cross from Kevin De Bruyne.

City could have had more goals, but also needed to be rigid and organised defensively against the in-form hosts. Sterling felt that the team showed their hunger and desire in the perfect manner after the 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion last time out.

“I thought it was a strong team performance,” he reflected. “It was a difficult game as we thought it would be as they’re in great form at the moment and we’re just happy to get the win.

“We knew we needed to get a result here, we dug deep and we got the win.

“We said as a group we needed to find something from within, and I feel with did exactly that and showed great fighting spirit.”

The winger also touched on the upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Arsenal.
