Phil Foden had given City an early lead as we dominated the opening stages, but Viktor Gyökeres scored a hat-trick – including two penalties – and Maxi Araújo added another as Ruben Amorim was given a perfect send off in his final home game in charge of the Portuguese champions.
After losing to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup and Bournemouth in the Premier League, it means City have lost three on the spin in all competitions.
It represents a difficult run of results for City, but Guardiola believes there were periods in which our performance in Lisbon was exceptional.
“They know it,” said the boss.
“ I know it is impossible for the world to say this because it was 4-1.
“But they know we played good in certain moments.
“Against Bournemouth we were not. I would say that we have to do a lot to score our goals.
“In the first half, Savinho lost the ball and Gyökeres had the one against one but other than that they didn’t do anything.
“Doing this against that team, an exceptional team.”
