Having drawn 1-1 at home in the initial tie, Keegan’s men got off to the worse possible start when Ledley King curled Spurs in front after two minutes.
Robbie Keane poked home to double their advantage before Christian Ziege rifled in a brilliant 25-yard free-kick and it got worse for City when Joey Barton picked up a second yellow card for dissent as he left the pitch for half-time.
A Sylvain Distin header pulled one back three minutes after the break, before Paul Bosvelt’s deflected volley gave the 10 men hope and that hope was realised when Shaun Wright-Phillips chipped Kasey Keller to equalise.
Substitute Jon Macken then headed in a 90th minute winner to seal a win that seemed impossible 45-minutes earlier.
