Tommy Doyle says Manchester City’s senior players have told him not to show them too much respect as he fights to establish himself in the first-team squad.

The 18-year-old Academy graduate has been training with Pep Guardiola’s side since making his debut last season and his progress has been rewarded with a four-year extension to his current contract.

A lifelong fan, Doyle admits to having stars in his eyes when he was initially promoted to the senior set-up, but some sage advice from his more experienced team-mates helped him feel at home in the environment.

“It’s surreal at the start because as a fan you see them, and you think ‘woah’,” he said after putting pen to paper on his new deal.

“It’s a bit of a surreal moment, but I’ve spoken to a few of them and they say now is not the time to be starstruck or look at them like superstars, it’s time to work hard and try and get a position in the team.

“The pace of training everyday is so fast. It’s quick and overall it makes you a better player because you need to be on it every day.”
