A City legend and Pep Guardiola‘s first signing as manager, the midfielder left the Club for Barcelona at the end of our 2022/23 Treble-winning season.
The German spent seven incredible seasons at the Etihad Stadium, and warmly greeted his former team-mates and staff ahead of the encounter at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium.
After over one hour’s delay to kick-off due to a lightning storm, Pep Guardiola‘s men were edged out on penalties by our opponents in front of a sell-out crowd at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CITY’S USA TOUR
Kalvin Phillips and Jacob Wright were the unlucky pair to see their spot kicks saved in the shootout with the game finishing level after 90 minutes.
Barcelona had taken the lead against the run of play midway through the first half when Pau Victor slotted under the onrushing Ederson after being released in behind.
City responded when Nico O’Reilly picked up play from Josko Gvardiol and firing into the far corner, but the Spanish side regained the lead on half-time through Pablo Torre.
Once again Guardiola‘s men drew level, this time just before the hour when Jack Grealish sent an unstoppable drive into the Barcelona net from a tight angle.
We pressed for a winner, but ultimately fell short in the lottery that is a penalty shootout.
