Looking to progress to Friday’s showpiece final against Brazilian champions Fluminese, City needed to be patient in the opening period.
With the Japanese side happy to sit back and defend in numbers, clearcut opportunities were few and far between in the stifling Jeddah heat.
Watched by a large crowd inside the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, City were camped in and around the Urawa Reds’ box for the majority of the first 45.
But it was in added first-half time that City finally made the breakthrough as Matheus Nunes sent in a low cross that was turned into his own net by Marius Hoibraten.
City took just seven second-half minutes to double the lead as Kyle Walker‘s pass released Mateo Kovacic to race clear and thump a rising shot past keeper Shusaku Nishikawa and make it 2-0.
On the hour, the Blues wrapped up victory with a low deflected shot from Bernardo making it 3-0 to give the scoreline a more realistic look given City’s almost total domination.
We will now face Fluminese in the final on Friday, 22 December 18:00 (UK).
