In Washington, D.C., USA, young leaders are promoting clean waterways and are tackling urban water pollution.
Known for its unique system of rivers and lakes, the city is dependent on these as a vital source of water. In recent years, the river network has been affected by climate change, resulting in lower river levels than normal.
Saede, Anna and the team of young leaders in Washington, D.C. are using the power of football to educate young people on the importance of clean waterways and the challenges affecting the local water bodies, including the Anacostia River.
Saede said: “We use football to introduce concepts of water use, pollution, filtration, to empower young people to safely interact with the Anacostia and to understand its impact and reach within our community.”
Reflecting on the impact of the project, Anna added: “A lot of work on the Anacostia is centred around giving resource back to the community. I think it’s great how the kids engage and take accountability by taking on the information and learning how they can play a role.”
This Cityzens Giving project is delivered in partnership with DC SCORES.
