Pep Guardiola is not concerned whether his side reach 100 Premier League goals for the third time in four years - and says the only thing he wants is to secure the title.

City have reached a century of Premier League goals on three occasions, the first being under Manuel Pellegrini in 2013/14 when 102 goals were scored.

The Pep Guardiola’s Centurions scored a record 106 goals in 2018/19, repeating the feat the season after with 102.

Currently, City have 94 goals this campaign with two games remaining against West Ham and Aston Villa.

Asked whether reaching another century was important, Guardiola replied: “The important thing is winning the Premier League.

“Scoring 99 and winning the Premier League would be good, but the most important thing is winning it.

“We need four points, but we are going to play to win the first one and after the second one with Aston Villa with our people when everything will be sold out, go there and try make three more points and retain the title.

“This is the only target right now. The present is the most important thing.”

The boss was also asked if he would ever consider a couple of goals being enough in a game and whether he could then rest some of his players.

But he says attack is the best form of defence…

“The best way to protect when you are 2-0 ahead is to continue what you have done to get 2-0,” he said.

“Always I have said: sometimes we play bad, because we have a bad afternoon, or the other team are better in that moment and to you must adapt.

“But the idea, and they know it, is to play as good as possible. To play well, but especially to improve and this season I have the feeling we have better deep runners, and we attack the back line much better with more consistency.

“We arrive with more people to the box, and I think we have learned that ourselves and we have to continue to do it but respect the opponent because it is the best way to respect our people.

“If you can score goals you have to do it because otherwise, the opponent will do it.”
