Alex Greenwood says Saturday’s sold-out Continental Cup final is a sign women’s football is heading in the right direction.

The defender believes the significance of a capacity crowd being in attendance at Wimbledon’s Plough Lane to watch Manchester City take on Chelsea in the showpiece game cannot be overstated.

Gareth Taylor’s side face the defending champions on Saturday 5 March, three days before International Women’s Day and, with the game also being broadcast on BBC 2 in the UK, Greenwood says the occasion being so accessible to fans is really positive for the women’s game.

“It’s massive [that the game is sold out],” she said at her pre-match press conference. “It’s brilliant.

“We’re definitely heading in the right direction in that respect. In terms of International Women’s Day, it’s massive that it’s accessible for people to come and watch.

“Hopefully that continues to grow year on year.”
