Alex Greenwood says City were determined to start pre-season with a victory after the penalty shoot-out win over Leicester City in Australia.

Greenwood was our captain on the night at HBF Park and played the first 45 minutes as the Foxes held us to a 0-0 draw.

That took the match straight to penalties, with Japanese international goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita making two saves in her first appearances while Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, Mary Fowler, Aoba Fujino and Vivianne Miedema converted their spot kicks.

Leicester 0-0 City (3-4p) | Match report

It sees City through to the final of the Perth International Cup, where we will face the winner of Thursday’s semi-final between Paris Saint-Germain and West Ham United.

Speaking after Wednesday’s narrow victory, Greenwood was delighted with what she saw.

“It was really positive,” she said.

“We spoke about it before the game, we want to start the season as we mean to go on and that’s with winning mentality.

“Of course today was about the bigger picture, everyone getting minutes and coming through healthy which we all have. Ultimately to get the win as well was important.”
