City boss Andree Jeglertz says news of Alex Greenwood’s new contract has served as the perfect boost ahead of Saturday’s huge Women’s Super League Etihad derby with Manchester United.

The City skipper has agreed a contract extension that will see here take her stay at the Club through to the summer of 2027.

The England central defender has been inspired form so far this season and been a key part of City’s rise to the top of the Women’s Super League table.

And for Jeglertz, Greenwood’s commitment and faith in the Club served as the perfect statement of intent ahead of this weekend’s eagerly-awaited clash with United.

“I’m very happy. She’s our captain, a great player, leader but also a person that always wants to become better both individually but also for the team to become better,” Jeglertz told the media at Thursday’s pre-match press conference.

“For us it’s a huge thing that she wants to extend, which means that we’re doing a lot of good things right now and she believes in the process.

“She believes in what we want to do in the coming years.

“It’s a good statement for here and to us and to the club and what we want to do.”

City will kick off on Saturday lunchtime sitting in top spot after a magnificent run of seven straight league wins.

United meanwhile lie third, four points behind and for the Swedish coach, the occasion is one he wants his players to relish and savour.

“You cannot take down how big it is,” Jeglertz added.

“We need to live that and enjoy it to play these kinds of games because this is why they started playing football.

“To have the opportunity to play a derby in this great stadium in front of our home fans, they need to enjoy it. That is one of my key messages.

“The load will be tough but make sure they enjoy it.”
