Students from across Manchester joined City in the Community ahead of International Women’s Day, for a unique event at the City Football Academy.

The Club’s Official Charity welcomed 90 young women to the indoor pitch for a multi-sports festival, followed by a speed-networking event with female senior leaders from Manchester City Football Club, City in the Community and external organisations at the Etihad stadium.

The event’s multi-sports festival included football games, street dancing and team-building workshops.

As part of the morning’s activities, Club sponsor PUMA also donated sports bras to all participants during a breast health education session.

CITY CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2022

City in the Community’s Senior Operations Manager, Lisa McKay, said: “It has been amazing to see so many women come together in celebration.

“We are extremely passionate about empowering young people through football, and this event was a perfect example of how we can do this through physical activity, workshops, and open conversation.

“But it’s not just today; City in the Community works tirelessly to breakdown barriers and create safe spaces for women of all ages across the year - from our early years initiatives right through to walking football and the dementia programme.

“I hope that everyone enjoyed today’s festivities just as much as we did and have walked away feeling more empowered than ever to achieve their goals.”

The students were all invited from schools within which City in the Community delivers the Change Makers programme.

Funded by the Premier League and Sport Relief, Change Makers supports girls and young women in developing their personal skills and positive attitudes for leadership.

It is delivered in high schools by 37 clubs, across the Premier League Kicks and Premier League Inspires programmes.

Attending schools included: The East Manchester Academy, Falinge Park, Droylsden, MCA, Denton, Rayner Stephens and Stockport School.

One participant from The East Manchester Academy said the International Women’s Day event was a life changing experience.

She said: “I think it’s been amazing and a life changing experience because [the people we met] were sharing their opinions, experiences and thoughts on everyday life.”

Another added: “Today I’ve really enjoyed the dancing, talking about female empowerment and discussing how to feel comfortable in yourself.”

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
