It was a frustrating evening at the Joie Stadium as Leicester found themselves 2-0 up at half-time courtesy of goals from Janice Cayman and Sophie Howard.
A change of personnel inspired a new level of energy in City as Gareth Taylor’s side looked to claw back any potential points.
It didn’t take long as Deyna Castellanos fired a rocket towards goal from 20 yards. Her shot ricocheted off the crossbar and into the back of the net four minutes after the restart.
The striker then turned provider as she teed up Laura Coombs around the penalty spot who placed the ball into the bottom left corner with a clinical strike.
City continued to push for a late winner with Taylor utilising his options on the bench, including Demi Stokes who made her 200th appearance after a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury.
But, in Continental Cup fashion, the two sides took part in a penalty shootout with the score level at full-time.
Khiara Keating and substitute goalkeeper Janina Leitzig pulled off phenomenal saves to take it to sudden death before Steph Houghton’s penalty was saved to see Leicester pick up two points.
