A memorable victory over our rivals back in January 2020...

Ahead of the latest clash between City and United next Sunday, we take a look back at a classic showdown between the sides at Leigh Sports Village.

On this occasion, it was the visitors who claimed the derby bragging rights as we beat our rivals in a five-goal thriller to progress to the last 16 of Women’s FA Cup.

It was the third time the two sides had met that season and it was City who struck first as Ellen White capitalised on Abby McManus’ under hit back pass to clip over goalkeeper Mary Earps from 18 yards.

White added a second after the break, getting in front of her marker to loop a curling effort over Earps from Lauren Hemp’s pinpoint delivery.

United’s response was positive, and the hosts peppered Ellie Roebuck’s goal with a number of efforts before substitute Lauren James latched onto a long ball, cut inside Alex Greenwood and fired into the bottom corner to reduce the deficit.

City’s two goal advantage was restored six minutes later when Jill Scott’s fierce 18-yard drive deflected off a defender to wrongfoot Earps in the United goal.

Lauren Hemp turned a corner into her own net two minutes from time to set up a nervy finale, but Nick Cushing’s side held on to seal our place in the fifth round.
