City defender Demi Stokes says she’s proud of her clubmates after England reached their first-ever World Cup final.

Following an enthralling 3-1 victory over co-hosts Australia in the semi-finals, the Lionesses face Spain in the 2023 showpiece on Sunday 20 August, with kick-off scheduled for 11:00 (UK).

In total, there are six members of Gareth Taylor’s side among Sarina Wiegman’s heroic squad, with the sextet of players making an impressive impact on and off the field.

So far, Alex Greenwood, Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp have featured in all of the current European Champions’ matches at the prestigious competition - with our defender starting every game and our midfielders scoring four goals between them.

And Stokes believes England’s success in the southern hemisphere will have a positive long-lasting impact on the future of the women’s game.

“It’s been good [watching the World Cup]. I keep saying I’m like a little fan girl.

“It’s just been good obviously to watch teammates and friends do well because it’s been a long time coming. I think to finally get there and see them achieve that – I’m proud of them.

“I just keeping say ‘wow’ I can’t believe they’re in the final, but I think we’ll go on and finish it.

“It’s just so nice to see because you know for how long everyone’s been saying ‘we need to get past the semi-finals’ and ‘we need to get to a final’.

“I think for them to finally get there and the girls probably feel like they’ve almost won because they’ve got there but I know they’ve got one more game to go.

“If you look at the Euros and seen what that’s done for the game, for women and you’re seeing now opportunities in punditry and referees. It’s massive for everyone.

“I’m just excited for them and I hope they go on and finish it.”
